When the time comes to deal with a skunk in your home or yard, you have a number of options available to you. However, many people choose to try and poison skunks and so, before you try this option, make sure you find out whether it is advisable to poison a skunk. The truth is that in these modern times, there are better and more humane ways to kill a skunk than to poison it.
Poisoning is reckless
The simple truth is that you would be acting in a very reckless manner if you choose to poison a skunk. The fact of the matter is poisoning a skunk can do a lot of harm and some of this harm can be done to you, your family and your pets. If you do have to get rid of a skunk, then you need to choose a better option than to use poison.
Creates many problems
The first thing you need to keep in mind when trying to poison a skunk is that it can create a number of problems including locating its carcass. Also, if you do not locate the carcass in time, then it will start to decay and, in the process, it will give off a very foul smell. Some people believe that poisoning a skunk will actually result in the animal being driven out into the open. But, this is far from the truth as there is a greater likelihood that the skunk on being poisoned will simply curl up and die in its den.
Indiscriminately kills
Another reason to not use poison is that poison is very indiscriminate in what it kills. So, if another animal such as your pet or even your children accidentally consume the poison, you would be left with a huge problem. Wherever the poison is placed, there is no guarantee that it won't fall into the hands of the wrong animal or your children. If they get poisoned then it can pose a huge health problem that you really do not want to have to deal with.
Harming the ecology
Also, when you choose to poison a skunk, you are also inadvertently doing a lot of harm to the environment. The simple truth is poison is dangerous to the ecology and there is no telling when the wrong animal consumes the poison. Even if the skunk consumed the poison and died, there is a chance that another animal may eat its carcass. When that happens, the other animal can die or fall seriously ill.
The truth is there are better ways to get rid of skunks than by poisoning them. Poison is also messy to handle and it is also not a humane option. The right way to deal with skunks is to trap them and then relocate them elsewhere. If you cannot relocate the trapped skunk, then you can euthanize it or even shoot it instead of resorting to poisoning it.
